Schaffer Jumps Ahead For Sportsman Win At IRP

The Callaway Investments Sportsman Series returned to the Lucas Oil Raceway on Tuesday night for the first time in over a year, and Joe Schaffer Jr. started the night by setting a new track record for his 18th career SARA pole. A 7-car invert brought Kevin J. Myers to the front to lead the field to the green flag, but it was Derek Robinson who took over the top spot early on. As the race opened with a 49-lap green flag run, it allowed plenty of battling up front. Schaffer challenged Robinson for the lead, and the two battled side-by-side for a number of laps while Matt Rolfe and Bill Martin caught up and joined the party. After a 20-lap fight for the lead amongst the four drivers for the lead, Rolfe would prevail and led up until the first caution. However on the following restart, Schaffer used a strong restart to stay to the outside of Rolfe and would use the momentum to take over the lead, and Schaffer went on to pick up the victory, his 3rd of the season, and the 27th career win of his career.

At the top of the points standings, Matt Rolfe used his 4th place finish to extend his points lead over Trevor Edwards up to 18 points with just two races left in the season. Next week the series heads to Oxford Plains for 100 laps.
