Davis Chassis Works Contender Series – Super Late Models – Round 11 – January 2, 2019 – Oxford Plains Speedway
After having to postpone the event earlier in the season, the Contender Series made the trip up to Oxford to finish off their season with a pair of 150 lap races.
Race 1 Summary – After a couple quick cautions, the race would go green for the final 130 laps, and Alex McCollum jumped out to the early lead. He was able to extend the gap out front to over 1.5 seconds at times, but after halfway Jacob Harberts began cutting into the lead, and just prior to lap 100 the gap shrunk in a hurry as the lead was cut down to a car length. But McCollum would hold him off over the next 25 laps, and eventually built himself another gap as he went on to dominate the race for his 2nd career SARA win.
Race 2 Summary – Chris Canfield started at the front of Race 2 and quickly showed his strength as he jumped out to the early lead. The race had a total of 5 cautions that brought the field back together, but it didn’t matter for Canfield as he pulled away each time, building the gap after each restart allowing himself to hold a comfy lead while the championship battle happened behind him. The final caution on lap 148 sealed the deal and Canfield would score the win in dominating fashion for his 1st career SARA victory.
Hard Chargers – Brian Korlacki (Race 1, +5 pos.), Justin LaDuke & Andrew Wooten (Race 2, +6 pos.)
Pole Winner – Alex McCollum (14.819 seconds)
Rookie of the Season – Devon Morgan picked up the Rookie of the Season honors, scoring 77 out of a possible 80 points in the Rookie standings.
Champion – Brandon Wilkinson entered the night up by 6 points in the standings over Devon Morgan, but connection issues early forced Wilkinson to drop to the back. Morgan ran inside the top 3 all night, while Wilkinson recovered to finish in the 5th spot, but with Morgan scoring a 2nd place finish he was able to score enough points to erase the deficit and to win the championship by just 2 points. Congrats to Devon Morgan, the 2018 Fall Season Davis Chassis Works Contender Series champion!
