The 2017 Summer Season got under way last night with the Callaway Investments Sportsman Series taking on the Iowa Speedway for a 78-lap race.

Race Winner – Tim Bills fell back as far as 11th in the opening laps of the race before charging up and challenging for the lead by lap 20. After taking over out front on lap 28, Bills would hold off a number of challenges from Joe Schaffer Jr. and Trevor Edwards and would hang on for the season opening victory, and his 19th career SARA win.

Pole Award – Trevor Edwards set a new track record at Iowa with a lap of 26.856 seconds.

Hard Charger – Clay Snider started back in the 12th position before moving up and battling inside the top five for most of the night, gaining 7 positions to finish in 5th.

Biggest Loser – In his first career SARA race, Austin Jones was immediately thrown into the action when he started on pole after the 7-car invert, but connection issues forced him to drop out early for a 14th place finish.

Rookie of the Race – Despite his 14th place run, Austin Jones was able to lead a lap early, and was the highest finishing rookie out of the two rookies in the race.

Title Fight – Tim Bills comes out of the gate with a victory, which puts him on top of the standings after just one race, but there’s plenty of racing left this season to see if he can remain on the top step.
