This past Thursday night, The Button Box Shop Super Series went out west to the Irwindale Speedway for the TUNDRA Super Late Models 150 and the second-to-last race of the season.
Race Winner – Bill Martin started up front after the invert and led nearly the first half of the race. After a restart on lap 67, Joe Schaffer Jr. challenged for the lead and when Martin went to fall in behind, the two made contact, allowing Windell Stratton to sneak by on the inside to take the lead. Stratton took full advantage of taking the lead, and held off a couple more charges from Martin, and then went on to pick up the victory for his first career Super Series win, and his 5th SARA victory.
Pole Award – Windell Stratton also picked up the pole award with a lap of 16.891 seconds for his 6th career pole.
Hard Charger – David Krikorian had a subpar qualifying effort starting 21st, but charged to the front but came up a spot short to finish 2nd.
Rookie of the Race – Christian Challiner ran inside the top five all night, but couldn’t quite get to the front and had to settle for 4th as the top rookie.
Triple Crown – The Triple Crown battle came down to Christian Challiner and Joe Schaffer Jr. who entered the night tied, and Challiner would finish 1 spot ahead of Schaffer to score the Triple Crown championship, with finishes of 3rd, 4th, and 4th.
Title Fight – A tight points battle at the top of the standings heading into the night, would end up with a much larger gap by the end of the night after Adam Benefiel had a last lap spin. The points lead out front grew up to 34 for points Christian Challiner which is enough to clinch the championship with one race remaining on the season, barring any possible penalties next week.
Up Next – Next Week the series will head to Lanier for championship night, in the HidesPride.com Throwback 200 where drivers will show off some impressive throwback schemes in a 200-lap season finale.
