The 2017 Spring Season for the Dunleavy’s Modified Series came to an end last night as the Tour Modifieds took on Lanier for a 150-lap season finale.
One driver not in attendance for the race, would be the driver that will be crowned as the champion. Bill Martin racked up enough points during the first 10 races of the season, never finishing worse than 3rd with 4 total wins, and with the help of drop races, he was able to miss the final two weeks of the season and still led the standings by 30 points by the end of the night.
Congrats to Bill Martin, the 2017 Spring Season Dunleavy’s Modified Series champion. Bill’s title run consisted of 10 starts, 4 wins, 1 pole, 10 top tens, 10 top fives, 408 laps led, and an average finish of 1.8. This is Martin’s 8th career SARA championship, the most all-time.
Race Winner – Trevor Edwards started 5th on the grid but by lap 21 he was already working his way past early race leader Ian Layne for the top spot. Throughout some long runs, Edwards extended his lead and never felt any pressure as he would go on to lead the final 130 laps of the race and picked up his 3rd win of the season in dominating fashion. The win was Edwards’ 9th career SARA victory.
Pole Award – Joe Schaffer Jr. with a new track record of 12.053 seconds, in our first ever Tour Modified race at Lanier
Hard Charger – N/A – Due to an 8-car invert, and drivers 9th on back not getting a valid qualifying lap, there was no Hard Charger bonus awarded.
Biggest Loser – 1st to 11th (-10) – After picking up the pole and being inverted back to 8th, Joe Schaffer Jr. worked his way up into the top 5 before getting caught up in a wreck that started in front of him, dropping him out of the race early.
Rookie of the Race – 3rd Place – Cayden Lapcevich battled with fellow rookie Keith Jeffery for positions in the top five late in the race and would end up with a 3rd place finish. The points battle however would end in a tie between the two drivers, as both would end the night with 74 out of a possible 80 rookie points on the season, becoming the 2017 Spring Season Dunleavy’s Modified Series Co-Rookies of the Season.
Title Fight – As mentioned above, Bill Martin took the night off after already locking up the championship two weeks early, and ended the night 30 points ahead of Trevor Edwards in the final standings to add another championship to his impressive total.
